A satellite is specialized wireless receiver or transmitter that is launched by a rocket and placed in an orbit around the Earth. There are hundreds of satellites currently in operation. They are used for such diverse as weather forecasting, television broadcast, amateur radio communication, internet communication, viewing property, and Global Positioning System (GPS).
